According to a study published last May in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, both men and women think that ladies with makeup are less trustworthy than those without it. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Diego, found that women who wore makeup were more likely to be perceived as more competent and trustworthy by men than they were by women.
In other words, the more makeup a woman wore the less likely she was to appear less competent or trustworthy to men. The study was based on a series of experiments in which participants were asked to rate the competence and trustworthiness of a group of people, ranging from strangers to friends and family members, and then rated how trustworthy they thought each person was.
Participants were also asked how much they agreed or disagreed with statements such as, “I trust women more than men,” and “Women are more reliable.” The researchers then compared the ratings of the participants who were wearing makeup to those of those who weren’t, to see if the makeup-wearing women were perceived more negatively than the non-mascot-wearers.
