A foreign smell on the pups can confuse the female and lead to neglect or cannibalism. If you want the animals to become aggressive, try to avoid touching them. Cannibalism can also be caused by a lack of food or water, which can lead to starvation and dehydration. If the mother is not able to care for her young, they may be left to fend for themselves.

Do mice cannibalize each other?

These results suggest that, at least in some cases, it is possible for a captive mouse to learn to be more protective of its own offspring than is the case in wild populations.
