Students will learn how to identify and manage pests, weeds, diseases, and other problems in their gardens, as well as the best ways to maintain and improve the quality of their garden. The course also provides students the opportunity to apply these skills in the classroom and on the farm.

Gardeners are not professionals with an academic degree in horticulture or a related field. Gardener is an amateur designation, while horticulturist is a professional designation. Master gardener has a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture degree. Master gardener is also a member of the Horticultural Society of America (HSA), which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as the national organization for the cultivation, propagation, and use of hothouse plants.
HSA members are required to have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada in order to be eligible to apply for membership in this organization. This means that you must have completed at least two years of college-level coursework and have passed a written exam to become a Member. The cost of membership is $25.00 per year and is non-refundable.
