To paint a sky, I create a blue graded wash lightening toward the horizon. While the paper is still wet, I stroke the sky along the horizon with a pale wash of yellow ochre or a similar shade. The sky becomes distinctly lighter when it is distant. I then use the same technique to paint the clouds.
I use a light blue wash to lighten the cloud tops, and a darker blue to darken them. This is a technique that can be applied to almost any sky color, but it is particularly effective on blue skies, as they tend to be more blue than other sky colors.

How do you make cerulean blue with watercolor?
