Set your machine to a straight stitch. From the top of the hem, place a 14 inch seam allowance. Go all the way around. The pins need to be removed as you go. Sew the bottom hem in place with a 1/4 inch hem allowance. Sew the two sides together using the same seam allowances as the front and back. Use a zig zag stitch to finish the edges.

Can you hem your own suit pants?
As fabric tape is usually one inch wide, leave at least an 114” edge for your seam to begin this process. Next, cut the length of fabric tape that you’ll need for your hem, and press it onto the inside of your suit pants. If you want your cuff to be the length you want it to be, fold the cuff up over the fabric tape. Now you’re ready to hem your pants!
You’ll want to make sure that the hem of the pants is as straight as you can get it. You can do this with a straight stitch, or you could use a zigzag stitch. Either way, you should be able to get a nice, even hem. If you don’t have a sewing machine, just use your hands or a pair of scissors to trim the excess fabric away from the seam.
How much can suit pants be hemmed?
The waist of a pair of trousers can be let in or taken out 2-3″. It is as far as you can take the pants out if you look inside the seat for extra fabric. Shorter trousers need fabric at both ends of the leg to be longer. If you have a long leg, you may need to shorten the trousers by 1-2 inches to accommodate the extra length.
You can also shorten them by a couple of inches if you want to be able to wear them with trousers that are longer than your legs. If you are wearing trousers with a waist that is more than 1.5 inches above the knee, it may be necessary to lengthen them a bit to make them fit.
What length should dress pants be?
Tailor the trousers so that they are long enough for one break, or slight fold in the fabric, at the front. If you want a more contemporary look, take the trousers a little shorter so that they don’t touch the top of your knee.
If you’re going to be wearing your trousers with a jacket, you’ll want to make sure that the jacket has enough room to move around. If it’s too tight, it won’t be able to breathe, and it will be uncomfortable to wear. The jacket should also have enough pockets to hold your wallet, phone, keys, etc.
Does hem tape work?
It is a good idea to use hemming tape to seal the edges of the fabric. You will need to cut two pieces of fabric that are about the same width and length as the length of your skirt, but not so long that they overlap each other. This will give you a hem that is about 1/2 inch longer than your waist measurement.
If you have a long skirt and a short waist, you may want to trim the excess fabric to make it easier to hem. I cut my skirt at a length that was about 3/4 of an inch shorter than my waist size, so I ended up with about 2 inches of extra fabric on each side.
Cut your fabric pieces to the desired length, and then pin them together at the top and bottom. Pin the pieces together and sew them to one another with a 1-inch seam allowance. Be careful not to sew too tightly, or you’ll have to re-sew the seam later. Once you’ve sewn the seams, use a straight stitch to finish the edges.
How deep should the hem be on dress pants?
For dress pants or khakis, a 1” hem is standard. The standard hem is 1/2” if you are hemming jeans. The pants need to be turned inside out. To measure 1” above the knee, use a tape measure or hem gauge. Hem the hem of your pants using a needle and thread.
The thread should be long enough to go all the way around the leg, but not so long that you can’t thread the needle through it. Do not use thread that is too long or too short, as this will make it difficult to thread your needle. When you have finished threading, pull your thread tight and secure it with a knot.
You should now have a hem that looks like the picture below.
