Can I homeschool my child in South Carolina?
In South Carolina, parents or guardians are allowed to home school their children. To be compliant with the code of laws, each home needs to register with an accountability option. The local school district and the State Board of Education may be used for registration. Homeschoolers are not required to attend school during the school year.
However, they must be home–schooled for at least 30 days per year, and may not be enrolled in any public or private elementary or secondary school. Homeschooling is not allowed in the following areas: public high schools, public colleges or universities, or public charter schools.

Charter schools are required to teach a minimum of 50% of their students, while private homeschoolers require a parent to teach at least half of their children‘s education. In the case of home schooling, there is no requirement that the home–schooled child be enrolled in a public school.

The result is that home schooled children are more likely to be poor, less educated, and less able to read and write than their peers.

Creative ways to break up the days and subject matter can be found once you have decided when to school. We don’t have to complete every subject, so you can focus on one or two subjects. For example, if you are home schooled and want to learn about the history of the United States, you could choose a history class that focuses on the Civil War.
You could also choose an English class focused on Shakespeare, or a math class focusing on calculus. If you decide to take a science class, it could be a biology class or an astronomy class. Whatever you choose, make sure it is a subject that interests you and that you enjoy learning about.
