How do you tumble rocks at home?
To fill the barrel with stones, place your clean rocks in the tumbler. Add enough water to cover the stones and then add the coarse grind. For at least seven days, 24 hours a day, or until the water runs clear, run the tumbler with this mixture.
The water should be clear, but not so clear that you can’t see through the rocks. If you’re not sure, add a little more water and run it for a few more days. If you don’t have access to a water-tight container, you’ll need to use a bucket.
Fill the bucket about 1/2 full with water, then fill it about 3/4 full again with the fine grind. You’ll want to keep adding water until you get the right consistency. Once you’ve got the correct consistency, pour the mixture into a clean container and store it in a cool, dry place for up to 3 months.
How do you tumble rocks without a tumbler?
Use food-grade diatomaceous earth as it contains the finest particles. Buff the pebbles with the diatomaceous earth to make them shine. You can put the DE in a plastic container with some rocks and shake it. The container should have five times more DE than the rock.
If you don’t have a container big enough to hold all of your rocks, you can make your own by using a plastic bag with a hole cut in the bottom. Fill the bag half way with sand and the other half with DE. Shake it well to mix the two materials.
Put the sand in your container and fill it with rocks. Add a few drops of water to the container to keep it from drying out. Leave it for a couple of days to dry. When you’re ready to use it, pour the water out and let it dry completely before using it again.
