Whether or not scrim goes on the top or bottom is subject to a heated debate, but the experts generally agree that the scrim goes on the bottom side, nearest to the backing. The answer is based on the fact that the scrim should hit the side of the batting which will most likely be hit by the ball. If you’re a hitter, you want to hit it as hard as you can.
If you don’t, it’s not going to go far, and you’ll end up with a bad swing. So, if you have a good swing, hitting it hard is the best way to maximize your chances of hitting a home run. But if your swing isn’t as good as it could be, then you might as well just hit a ball straight up in the air and hope it goes over the fence.
That’s what most hitters do when they’re not hitting home runs, which is why they have such a hard time getting on base. It’s also why you see a lot of guys who are hitting.300 or better but who aren’t hitting for average or power. How much bigger should batting be than quilt top?

This will give you a backing that’s about 3/4″ larger in the front and 1/2″ smaller on the back than it would be if you had just used batting. If you’re using batting, make sure that it’s the right size for the size of batting you are using.
For example, if I’m using a batting of 1.5″ wide, I want my backing to have a width of about 2″, so I’ll cut out a 2.25″ x 3.75″ piece and cut it into two pieces. I will fold one piece into the other and sew it together. I like to use a seam ripper to do this so that I don’t have to worry about tearing the fabric.
