If the tailpiece will not line up with the trap, move the trap into its original position, tighten the collar with the pipe wrench and obtain a flexible tailpiece extension for your drain.
The outer diameter of the drain is usually 1 1/2 inches, while the inner diameter is usually 1 1/2 inches. If you are using a trap that is not designed to be used with a drain pipe extension, you will need to purchase a new trap.

Do flexible P-traps work?
If you use a flexible p trap, you’re more likely to get the wrong shape, and you’re more likely to accidentally misshape it. The force might cause it to come back to it’s original shape. If you have a p-trap in your home, it’s a good idea to check it regularly to make sure it doesn’t have any cracks or other problems. If it does, replace it.

When you are ready to drain the sink, place the wood piece on top of the drained sink. Then place a bucket of cold water over the bucket and let it sit for a few minutes. After a couple of minutes, it will start to fill up. Once it has filled up, remove the wooden piece and place it back in the hole.
Should faucet line up with drain?
If it’s a drop in or a bit farther back it’s on a sink, the faucet sits back on the sink rim. If you don’t have a drain in your sink, you’ll need to make one.
The easiest way to do this is to drill a small hole in the bottom of a cupboard or closet. You can also use a hole saw to cut out the hole. If you’re going to be doing this yourself, make sure you have the right tools and materials.
