DHS has not yet responded to the EFF’s request for comment, but a DHS spokesperson told the Washington Post that the agency has no plans to change its policy on fake surveillance cameras.
“We are not aware of any instances in which DHS is considering a change to its policies,” the spokesperson said in an email to Motherboard. Fake cameras have been around for a while. In the early 2000s, the FBI began using them to catch criminals. But in recent years, they’ve also been used by law enforcement agencies, including the NYPD, to monitor protests and protests against police brutality.
