Constant flickering and smoking occur when the teardrop shape of the flame is disturbed. This allows small amounts of unburned carbon particles to escape from the flame as a visible cloud of smoke. When the fire is extinguished, the smoke will dissipate and the flames will return to their original shape.

Is it normal for candle flames to flicker?

A dancing flame signifies high energy in a spell. A small one means the spell may be overwhelmed by the power of the flame. At 1st level, a witch can use this ability as a standard action. The witch must be at least 6th level to select this hex. This hex lasts for a number of rounds equal to 1/2 the witch’s witch level (minimum 1 round).
At the end of each of these rounds, she must succeed at a Will save (DC = 10 + the hex’s level + her Charisma modifier). On a successful save, the effect ends. If the save is failed by 5 or more, or if the target is immune to being charmed or frightened, it is affected as if by a charm person spell for 1d4 rounds. These rounds do not need to be consecutive; they can be spent in any order.
How high should my candle flame be?
The flame should be 12” to 2” in height, with smaller candles being closer to 12” and larger candles going to as high as 2”. Excess smoke, soot, and mushrooming should not be produced by the flame. The flame shouldn’t dance or flicker, but should be a steady, steady flame. If the candle is too small, it will not burn evenly and will burn unevenly.
If the candles are too large, they will produce too much smoke and not enough light. It is also important that the flame is not too hot or too cold. Too much heat will cause the wax to melt, and too little will result in a burnt-out candle. A candle should never be left unattended for any length of time, especially if it is in the middle of a room.
