Both characters go through emotional ups and downs. The book didn’t feel summery to me. It’s hot and sticky during the day, but that’s not the point of the book. The story is told from the point of view of both characters and the reader is left to make up his or her own mind as to which character is telling the truth and which one is making up the story. It’s a great book and I highly recommend it.
