Was reading the Bible forbidden by Catholic Church?
Prohibitorum of the Catholic Church included various translations of the Bible. Bible translation was never forbidden to be used in sermons, but they were not allowed to use it in them. Who tried to destroy the Bible?
A.D. 301-304, the Roman Emperor Diocletian burned thousands of copies of the Bible, commanded that all Bibles be destroyed and decreed that any home with a Bible in it should be burned. He built a monument over what he thought was the tomb of Jesus. Bible was simply a collection of books written by different authors over a long period of time.
Some of these books were written in Greek, others in Latin, and still others were in Aramaic, which is the language spoken by the Jews at the time of Christ.
