Is encopresis a mental disorder?
Chronic neurotic encopresis (CNE), a childhood psychiatric disorder characterized by inappropriate fecal soiling, necessitated the formation of the following specific etiological factors: a) a neurologically immature developmental musculature, an organic condition which may predispose to the development of CNE; b) the presence of a predisposing environmental factor, e.g. a family history of psychiatric disorders; and c) genetic predisposition, i.e. the existence of certain genetic polymorphisms in the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) and/or the monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) gene.
In the present study, we aimed to investigate the role of these etiologic factors on the pathophysiology of chronic constipation in children and adolescents. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the prevalence of constipated children in a population-based sample of children aged 6–18 years and the severity of their chronic intestinal symptoms.
We also investigated the association between these symptoms and a range of psychosocial factors, such as parental depression, parental anxiety, and parental substance abuse, as well as the influence of genetic and environmental factors.
Can anxiety cause encopresis?
A child might develop encopresis if they feel anxious or stressed. A diagnosis of encopresis requires stool soiling to occur at least once a month for a minimum of 3 months. A doctor will perform a physical exam to determine the cause of the problem.
