With the small load on a trailer, without 12V power or electric brake wiring, I would expect 18 gauge would work. I would not use it for power or brakes, just lighting. If you convert your trailer to LEDs, it will be much better.
Rated 5 out of 5 by HomeDepotCustomer from This is a great product for the price. It is easy to install and works great. The only problem I have with it is that it does not come with a mounting bracket. You have to buy it separately.

What gauge is 7 pin trailer wiring?
The experts recommend a 12-gauge wire for the red or black wire, the white wire, the yellow wire, and the ground wire. If you are using a 6-way trailer, you will need to use the same 12 gauge wire that you would use to connect the trailer to your trailer hitch.
Can I use 14 gauge wire for trailer brakes?
The 14 gauge wire may be sufficient but for maximum braking effectiveness at full load capacity. If you are going to use a brake booster, you will need to make sure that the booster is not too large or too small. If it is too big, it will not be able to absorb the energy from the brake pads and will cause the brakes to overheat.
Too small of a booster will result in a loss of braking power. A good rule of thumb is that if you can feel a difference in the feel of your brakes when you brake hard, then you have a good booster. You may also want to consider adding a small amount of brake fluid to your booster to help absorb some of the heat generated by the braking pads.
What gauge wire do tail lights use?
For most automotive brake lights, 16 gauge insulated wire is sufficient, for leds it could be even smaller, for example. The short answer is yes, but it depends on the application.
For example, if you are going to use a brake light on a motorcycle, you will want to make sure that the light is not too bright or too dim, and that it does not interfere with the driver’s vision.
If you have a light that is bright enough to be distracting, then it is probably not the best idea to put it on your motorcycle. .
Is 18 AWG good for LED lights?
Most people would likely recommend using a solid core 18-gauge wire for your LED lights. If you would like your wires to fit into a small space, 18-gauge is about as big as you can go, and the cost difference between this wire size and a much smaller cable is negligible.
If you are going to use a smaller wire, you will need to make sure that the wire is long enough to reach all the way to the end of the LED light. If you have a wire that is too short, the light will not be able to be turned on and off.
You will also want to ensure that your wire does not have any kinks or bends in it, as this will make it more difficult to turn on your light when you turn it on.
What is the most common trailer wiring?
The 7-way connector is the most popular trailer connection type found on late model SUV’s, trucks and RV’s and comes with everything the others come with along with the availability for backup lights. The flat pin type is used to connect the trailer to a trailer hitch, while the slot type connects to the hitch.
Do I need 7 pin or 13 pin for trailer?
The most basic form of electrics, the single 7 pin socket is probably best suited to towing trailers or cycle carriers. Legally required rear lights can be displayed on the back of your vehicle with a 7 pin sockets.
If you are using a trailer, you will need to add a rear light to the rear of the trailer. If you have a cycle carrier, then you may also want to consider adding a front light as well.
