Students are able to read shorter sections of text after having it modeled by a teacher, other adult or peer. It allows for quick positive and negative feedback when students are reading aloud.
The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, found that students who had been taught to read aloud were more likely to be able to recognise the words they were reading and were also more confident in their ability to do so.

Is Echo reading effective?
Results indicated that modeled echo reading is an effective practice to improve certain aspects of oral reading fluency. All but two people improved their accuracy. The number of words read correctly in a minute was improved by all participants. The level of difficulty of the reading task was increased by most participants.
The results of this study are consistent with those of other studies that have examined the effects of phonemic awareness training. For example, in one study, participants were asked to read a series of sentences in which the first word of each sentence was the same as the last word in the previous sentence. The sentences were presented in random order, and the order of presentation was randomized.
Participants were instructed to focus their attention on the words that were in front of them and not to pay attention to the word that was behind them. They were told that they could stop reading at any time by pressing a button on a computer keyboard. After a few minutes, they were given a test to determine their accuracy in reading the sentences.
Those who had been trained in phonetic awareness were significantly more accurate than those who were not trained. In addition, the accuracy of trained participants was significantly higher than that of non-trained participants.
What is choral and echo reading?
Reading is a great way for students to learn to read. It is also a good way to teach students how to listen to and understand the words of the text. Choral readings can be used in a variety of ways. Is Echo reading repeated reading?

What does guided reading look like?
Students in a small-group setting individually read a text that you have selected at their instructional reading level during guided reading. To support students in building their in-the-head networks of strategic actions for achieving their goals, you provide teaching across the lesson.
In addition, you will provide students with an opportunity to practice their reading skills by reading a passage from a book that they have not yet read. Students will be asked to read the passage aloud to themselves and to each other. They will also be encouraged to share their own reading experiences with the class.
